US Army Command and General Staff College
Wendell C. King is Dean of Academics at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. The college has a 125-year tradition of educating military officers on national security and the art of war. Dr. King directs a college faculty of more than 400 personnel, organized into five separate schools, all with the mission of developing Army leaders for service to the nation. The U.S. Army Command and General Staff College is renowned for the study of leadership, the conduct of land warfare, and the synchronization and applications of all elements of military power.
In 1972 Dr. King entered active duty as a Sanitary Engineer in the Medical Service Corps, serving as a Project Leader providing environmental consultative support to Army installations worldwide. His next assignment was as an Engineer Staff Officer at HQ US Army Europe, where he developed engineering solutions for air, water, and noise problems. He was next assigned as Project Manager and Assistant Division Commander for the design of the Johnston Island Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. He was the government contracting officer for $42 million in environmental services supporting military installations.
After returning to school, Dr. King was appointed Chief of Environmental Health Engineering Division, US Army Environmental Hygiene Activity-West, supporting Army installations in a 23-state area. In 1991 he deployed as the Officer in Charge of the Southwest Asia Health Risk Assessment Team, evaluating the health risks of troops who had served in the restoration of Kuwait. The same year, Dr King was selected to be Academy Professor and Program Director of the Environmental Engineering Program at the United States Military Academy. He led the development of a fully accredited environmental engineering major for USMA.
Dr. King was assigned to the Army Chief of Staff’s crisis action team for the Rwanda relief mission as the medical operations planner in 1994. The following year, he was promoted to Professor of Environmental Engineering. In 1998 Congress approved his presidential nomination to be Professor and Head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering. Dr. King directed a faculty of 33 in educating cadets of the geographic and environmental sciences.
In 2000 Dr. King completed his M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies at the Naval War College. Five years later, he was deployed to the Office of Military Cooperation to assist in the development of the new Afghanistan Military Academy.
Dr. King holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Tennessee Technological University and an M.S. in Civil Engineering. He received a Ph.D. in environmental engineering at the University of Tennessee. He has authored two books, his most recent being “Understanding International Environmental Security: A Strategic Military Perspective,” and published more than 30 journal articles and dozens of scientific reports.
